Windows 10 power and display issue

I’ve been hearing people are having issues with their computers randomly powering on after a shutdown was issued and displays being dimmed and not being able to get the brightness back. Here are ways to fix those.

The fix

  • Right click on the Start button
  • Select Control Panel
  • Paste the following in the URL bar and press enter:
    • Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options
  • Under Plans shown on the battery meter, click Change plan settings for the selected plan (Should be Balanced)
  • Click on Change advanced power settings
  • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • In the Power Options window
    • Open the Sleep branch
      • Open the Allow wake timers
      • Change both sub options to Disable
    • Open the Power buttons and lid branch
      • Open the Power button action sub-branch
      • Change both sub options to Shut down
    • Open the Display branch
      • Open the Enable adaptive brightness sub-branch
      • Change both sub options to Disable
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
