Sony passes up EA’s Access as not a good value

Sony has announced it passed on the opportunity to have EA Access on PS4 as the company doesn’t believe it offers “good value”.

Speaking to Game Informer, a Sony spokesperson revealed the subscription service wasn’t a good fit for its new console considering the continuing popularity of PS Plus.

EA’s Access program (exclusive to the Xbox One) costs $5 per month or $30 per year and offers discounts to members, free (while membership is active) catalog titles, and pre-release access to game trials up to five days in advance. The service grants access to a vault of blockbuster EA titles including Battlefield 4, Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14 and Peggle 2, with more added in future. It’ll also offer 10 percent discounts on all EA digital content, which includes full games and DLC, as well as access to trials of new EA games nearly a week before they come out (with saves that copy over to the final game, should you choose to purchase it later). Games that will be eligible for early access and let your progress carry over to the retail version are Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, FIFA 15, NBA Live 15, and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Speaking to Game Informer, a Sony spokesperson revealed:

We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect,

PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer.

Sony passed this up in favor of their PS Now streaming service that allows you to rent games for 1 day, 7 days or 30 days (prices not yet known but speculated at around $4.99 or $5.99 but no time frame was shown). PS Now is currently in Beta and has 20 titles in its lineup including:

  • Ben Omniverse 2
  • Contrast
  • Eat Them!
  • FUEL
  • GRID
  • Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear
  • LUMINES: Supernova
  • NIGHTS Into Dreams…
  • PixelJump Racers 2nd Lap
  • PixelJunk Shooter 2
  • Puppeteer
  • Retro/Grade
  • Sniper Elite V2
